The generation that combines work and hobbies
The Minister of Manpower, Ida Fauziah revealed that the younger generation of workers now prefers work that can be done remotely. They even made a petition to resume the work from home system or work from home (WFH).
"I think the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic has become a new habit for them and they are making a petition to re-enforce WFH," said Ida at the 2023 National Coordination Meeting of Regional Heads and Forkopimda at the Sentul International Convention Center (SICC), Bogor, West Java, Tuesday (17/ 1).Those that Ida refers to are workers from generations Y and Z. For information, generation Y is people born in 1981-1996 or this year aged 27 years to 41 years. Meanwhile, Generation Z is those born from 1997 to 2012 or those aged 11-25 years in 2023.
Two generations who have experienced working from home or remotely during the pandemic are comfortable with this new lifestyle. "What we have to see is they want to be in remote working," he said. Moreover, this new work culture, Ida said, is part of the demographic bonus that is happening in Indonesia. Given the Y and Z generations that dominate the workforce now.
In addition, these two generations have started to combine work with hobbies. This means they like to work in a field that is really liked. "(They like ) a mix of fun and work," he says.
This condition is a new challenge for the government in absorbing the workforce. This is because 2.72 percent of the 8.2 million unemployed people have structural barriers.
He said that it was difficult for them to become new entrepreneurs. This means they don't want to be entrepreneurs or just want to be workers. "So this is a number that I think is very challenging. Very few of them want to become new entrepreneurs," he concluded.
