The nickel mines in Sulawesi, especially Southeast Sulawesi, will become a pillar of the country's economy. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Southeast Sulawesi is one of the provinces in
Indonesia that has very large nickel potential. Proven nickel reserves reach 1,085 billion tons, or around 55% of proven nickel reserves in Indonesia. In this article, we will review in depth the potential and business opportunities in the nickel mining sector in Southeast Sulawesi.Southeast Sulawesi is rich in nickel deposits which makes it one of the main mining locations in Indonesia. As we have discussed, nickel mining locations in Southeast Sulawesi are spread across 11 districts/cities, each of which has unique characteristics.
The following are several nickel mining locations in Southeast Sulawesi.
1. Konawe Regency
Located in the central part of Southeast Sulawesi, Konawe Regency is the largest nickel producer in this province. The history of Sulawesi nickel mining cannot be separated from the role of Konawe Regency, which has long been a mining center. Districts such as Ranomeeto, Sampara, Langgikima and Andowia are the main locations for nickel mining here.
2. North Konawe Regency
North Konawe also has huge nickel potential. This area offers nickel reserves which are mostly concentrated in Langgikima, Morosi and Andowia Districts.
3. South Konawe Regency
This area has nickel reserves of around 100 million tons, and mining activities are concentrated in Laeya, South Palangga and Laonti.
Apart from the several districts above, other locations such as Bombana, Kolaka, North Kolaka and East Kolaka also have nickel mining potential which is a driving force for nickel miners in Indonesia. In the next few years, it is inevitable that we will see Southeast Sulawesi as a mainstay in Indonesian and world nickel production as a form of downstreaming of national mining production.
